Bengaluru-based Metro Bikes, which was expected to launch a bicycle sharing service at Vadavalli on pilot basis, has backed off from the project, citing lack of protection to the bicycles

Soon after completing a study in the locality, the company had sought some sort of protection to the bicycles as it was planning to invest heavily in the project. But the city corporation refused to take responsibility of the two-wheelers. The company then sought assistance from the police department. But the department also refused to co-operate

Metro Bikes was ready to launch the project and was planning to introduce 500 bicycles across the region after identifying multiple parking lots. They were hopeful of increasing the number of bicycles to 5,000, depending on the response from public. They would have implemented the project only if some sort of assurance was given,” a source said

Chinese bike-sharing major Mobike, which had conducted talks with the corporation to implement the project at Saibaba Colony, had also withdrawn citing security reasons

Ofo, a Beijing-based bicycle sharing company that had launched operation at RS Puram for three months, left the city in June after experiencing vandalism

Recalling multiple instances of vandalism and theft of bicycles, an official with the city corporation said the region is prone to vehicle theft as over 200 bicycles that were used in the first pilot study had gone missing

Undeterred by the setback, the civic body has issued a new expression of interest seeking bicycles companies
