The Public Works Department (B&R) has shelved the project of widening and strengthening the 27-km Kaithal-Cheeka stretch that leads to Patiala (Punjab), it has been learnt

Now, it will only carpet the seven-metre-wide road; the work would start soon, said Subhash Bhamboo, Superintending Engineer (SE), Kaithal circle

The PWD had been awaiting a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Forest Department to cut trees for widening of the road. As the Forest Department has not issued the NOC, the projects stands shelved, much to the disappointment of residents. Kamal Chaudhary, a chartered accountant who frequently travels on the route, said the state government had been apathetic to the inconvenience caused to the public. The Kaithal-Cheeka road has been in bad shape for long. Big potholes have made driving risky, resulting in damage to vehicles

The condition of the road had started deteriorating about 10 months ago. But PWD officials kept on saying that they were waiting for the clearance from the Forest Department

Local journalists have flagged the issue before Deputy Commissioner during press conferences repeatedly, but to no avail

Sudhir Mehta, a local Congress leader, said people were disappointed with the state BJP government for not fulfilling its promise

Truck driver Joginder Singh and taxi driver Naresh Kumar, both travel frequently on the Kaithal-Cheeka route, said it was a matter of shame for the PWD that drivers had to travel on such bad roads and that too when the state government had made tall claims of improving the road infrastructure
