Booker Wholesale, a subsidiary of the UK-based Booker Group, operating under the cash and carry model catering to B2B businesses, is looking to foray into Hyderabad this year

We should be entering into Hyderabad within next six months. We have six stores in India as of now and cater to close to 25,000 kirana and provision stores annually,” according to one informed source, who spoke on condition of anonymity

Booker Wholesale entered into India in 2009 with its first store in Mumbai. The company today has five wholesale stores in Maharashtra and one in Gujarat (Surat). The company wanted to test the India market and has been selectively choosing cities for its stores

The company offers branded and private label goods which are sold to customers who own kirana stores, provision stores, foods stalls, restaurants and hotels

Our stores offer around 4,500 SKUs (stock keeping units) that primarily include FMCG and other groceries for the kirana stores and other buyers. The buyers get the entire range of products and variants in one place. They get refilling opportunity with ease. They can just go to the nearby Booker Wholesale store and pickup what they want without losing any time. We also offer loyalty schemes to them and pass on the price benefit what the manufacturers offer. So they get products at a fair price. Booker thus becomes a trusted source of supply of goods to these kirana store owners and other buyers,” the source explains

Third party transportation is also provided to kirana stores by Booker on a case-to-case basis. To make shopping easy for the buyers, Booker provides a technology platform that helps in ordering and picking goods. There is as much as automation that has been brought by the company in its operations

We often see in the wholesale format, not much mechanisation happens and the wholesale stores are not often built-to-suit. But at Booker, we make sure that mechanisation happens to bring ease of shopping to the buyers. We deal with large FMCG manufacturers such as Hindustan Unilever, Britannia and Coca Cola. India still carries about 90 per cent of its business through traditional trade (of which cash and carry format accounts for 4.3 per cent) and the remaining being modern trade

Booker Group is the UK’s food wholesaler. The Group comprises of Booker Wholesale, Makro, Booker Direct, Classic Drinks, Ritter Courivaud, Chef Direct and Booker India. Together it serves over 1.5 million customers. Tesco bought Booker for £3.7 billion in 2017
